Discord to let search engines index public server messages

Discord will allow search engines to index discussions in Discoverable Servers and make them accessible on the web to users outside the platform without an account or invitation.

The goal is to surface useful information to the wider internet community instead of keeping it buried in Discord conversations.

“Discussions in Discoverable Servers will soon be easier to find when you search the web, so you can find the answer you’re looking for and step straight into the conversation on Discord,” the messaging platform explains.

The changes apply only to Discoverable Servers, publicly listed communities with at least 1,000 members. The platform says it hosts approximately 63,000 such servers.

This decision excludes private servers, direct messages between users, and group announcements on servers that don’t meet the requirements.

According to the company’s schedule, the rollout will happen in two stages:

  • On November 16, every Discoverable Server will get a public Server Web Page which will display automatically generated summaries of active conversations from that date onward.
  • Starting mid-December, every eligible message posted on Discoverable Servers will appear on the Server Web Page and may be indexed by web search engines.

Server Web Pages will be automatically created on November 16 if admins haven’t created them by then, and the only way to avoid them is to change the server type to private before the cutoff date.

Discord has been piloting Community Messages and Server Web Pages in the NBA 2K, Rust, and Dead by Daylight gaming groups.

The December rollout will be gradual, and Discord says messages posted before the release date will be excluded.

Channel administrators can choose to exclude individual channels or turn off all channel content sharing entirely using controls available under Server Settings > Web Presence.

Community members can also control if their messages appear on the Server Web Page through User Settings > Data and Privacy. However, changing that setting only affects future messages, and past messages that became public cannot be retracted.

If admins and users leave the settings at their defaults, their content will automatically be included in the new sharing scheme.

However, message sharing will stay off by default in all EU countries, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. In those places, members must explicitly enable it in their privacy settings.

Underage users are automatically excluded and cannot activate the feature until they turn 18.
